D) Patient with suspected foreign body aspiration
LMA devices are useful rescue devices for difficult airway management, particularly after failed intubation. The smallest size, size 1, can be used in premature infants down to 1250-1500gm, and there are case reports of its use in infants as small as 800gm. LMA has also been used to temporize in patients with Pierre-Robin syndrome, maxillofacial trauma, and other difficult airway situations. Even novice practitioners have a high success rate of LMA placement. LMA would not, however, be useful in foreign body aspiration obstruction below the cords, since the LMA sits above the cords.
