You are seeing a 4 week old brought in for vomiting with every feed. The vomitus is non-bilious, non-projectile, and non-bloody. The baby is making 5 wet diapers per day and weighs 10 lbs, and has gained 30 gm per day since regaining birth weight at 10 days of age. The baby is formula feeding, taking 5 ounces every 2-3 hours.

C) The amount in each feed
Neonates typically take 2-3 oz (60-90mL) per feed, feeding every 2-3 hours. They will take on average an additional oz per feed with each month older they are, and stretch out the time between feeds to every 3-4 hours by about age 2 months. Expected weight gain (after regaining birth weight at 10-14 days of age) is 30gm/day in the first few months, then 20 gm/day from 4 months on. A rule of thumb is that babies double their birth weight by age 4-5 months, and triple it by age 1 year. Adequately fed babies should have 5-6 wet diapers per day, and be growing appropriately. This baby is likely being overfed and cannot tolerate 5 oz at a time.
