The highest risk for congenital varicella is between 8 and 20 weeks gestation, but cases have been reported as late as 28 weeks gestation. The highest risk to the infant is when the mother develops symptoms from 5 days before to 2 days after birth since there is not enough time for the mother to develop immunity and pass protective antibodies transplacentally.
