Thanksgiving Eve is sometimes referred to as “Blackout Wednesday” or “Drunksgiving,” and is one of the top dates for DUIs and drunk driving fatalities. Traffic as a whole, and consequently motor vehicle accidents, are very high around Thanksgiving. The most common food associated with esophageal impaction at Thanksgiving is turkey. An excessively sleepy toddler that has been at a large gathering should be investigated for accidental alcohol (or other substance/drug) ingestion. Suicide risk, contrary to popular myth, is lower on Thanksgiving, but domestic violence is higher during the winter holidays.
