Submersion injury occurs more commonly in males, African-Americans, and children aged 1-5 years. Pulmonary compromise can develop rapidly or gradually, and CXR can be normal initially. Hypothermic patients in cardiac arrest should have resuscitative efforts continued until core body temperature is 32-35C and asystole has been present for at least 20 minutes despite advanced life support measures. PEEP is a useful tool in mechanical ventilation of patients with submersion injury and oxygenation issues.
