Since one of the main outcomes of studies of IV magnesium for acute asthma exacerbations is typically need for hospital admission, it seems that patients that respond to magnesium + other therapies can be discharged home. A 2016 Cochrane review of magnesium for asthma in children found only 5 studies with 182 patients that compared IV magnesium to placebo. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27126744 IV magnesium reduced the odds of hospital admission by 68% (OR 0.32, 95%CI 0.14-0.74). The number needed to treat was 5 children for every 1 admission prevented.
