E) Patients can self-reduce the dislocation with the help of a 10mL syringe
TMJ or jaw or mandibular dislocation is commonly caused by forceful over-opening of the jaw, which can occur via traumatic etiologies or non-traumatic etiologies (e.g. yawning, dystonic reactions, seizures). The condyle is most commonly displaced anteriorly. Patients present with tenderness over the TMJ, the mouth slightly open and difficulty closing it. Imaging may be indicated to rule out an associated mandibular fracture. There are several methods of reduction, including intraoral, extraoral, and the syringe method, whereby one puts a 5mL or 10mL syringe oriented horizontally in the patient’s mouth and the patient bites down softly and rolls the syringe back and forth.
