It’s summertime, and you are seeing a 15 month old with fever and papulovesicular lesions on the palms, lateral borders of the feet and soles, and buttocks, as well as vesicles in the posterior pharynx.

Which of the following would be incorrect for you to tell the parents?

    A) It’s contagious, but all the masking being done for COVID will prevent transmission
The disease described is hand-foot-mouth disease, caused by enteroviruses, most commonly coxsackievirus A16 and enterovirus A71. These viruses are primarily transmitted through the fecal-oral route, so handwashing is more important to prevention than masking to prevent respiratory transmission (although the virus can be transmitted through respiratory and oral secretions as well as vesicle fluid). All the other answer choices are true.
