Bullous myringitis was formerly thought to be nearly pathognomonic for Mycoplasma infection, but although this has been thoroughly debunked with tympanocentesis studies, this old teaching sometimes persists. Bullous myringitis is caused by the same organisms that cause regular acute otitis media, and should be treated with the same antibiotics (first choice high-dose amoxicillin).
