Irrigation is contraindicated for vegetable or plant items that will swell with water such as beans, and for batteries (due to possible potentiation of electric current). Irrigation for ear foreign bodies requires that the fluid can get behind the foreign body and then propel it forward – a large bead is likely to be blocking the entire canal. Irrigation is an excellent method of removal of vaginal foreign bodies, of which toilet paper is the most common for young children.
