Patient with sickle cell trait have increased risk of rebleeding and glaucoma from hyphema, increased risk of exertional collapse with strenuous exercise aka E-CAST (which has led to NCAA screening of athletes for sickle trait), and hematuria due to renal papillary necrosis, but unlike patients with sickle cell anemia, do not become functionally asplenic, and are not at increased risk of serious bacterial illness when febrile (as compared to the general population).
