Hippemcrates just posted a great video and podcast interview with Peds ID and PEM specialists on measles covering the current outbreaks, early recognition, testing, complications, and ED management. Some high-yield pearls: ask about vaccination status (93% of the current cases are in unvaccinated patients), know the geographical hot-spots and ask about travel / exposures (Johns Hopkins maintains a website tracking cases), and look for Koplik spots, 2-3mm bluish-white spots on an erythematous background located in the buccal mucosa opposite the first molar (see below) in febrile unvaccinated children – you may see them before the rash appears.
