D) All of the above
Kratom is a natural plant extract made from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree native to SE Asia and known to have psychedelic effects. It is sold online as well as in gas stations and smoke shops. Kratom contains numerous alkaloids, two of which (mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine or 7-OH) are partial agonists for mu opioid receptors. Kratom produces a stimulatory effect and is used by some to self-treat opioid withdrawal symptoms. Kratom products sold may have additional synthetic 7-OH as an adulterant, raising the risk of substance use disorder, and the FDA made 7-OH a Schedule I drug in July, 2025. Naloxone has not been effective against kratom overdose symptoms. Kratom products have also been found to contain heavy metals and Salmonella, and several deaths have been linked to kratom tainted with Salmonella.
