SMART therapy using a combination long-acting beta-agonist and low-dose glucocorticoid in one inhaler (for example, formoterol and budesonide) is increasingly recommended in national guidelines management of patients 5 years and older with persistent asthma. SMART therapy has been shown to reduce acute exacerbations. Patients are maintained on 1 puff 1-2 times per day, and advised to use additional puffs as needed, up to 8 in 24 hours.
