C) Congestive heart failure
Pediatric cardiomyopathy is a rare diagnosis, with the majority presenting in the first 2 years of life. Dilated cardiomyopathies account for half the cases, with other forms being hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, left ventricular non-compaction, and restrictive. Common causes of dilated cardiomyopathy include infections (including viral myocarditis), toxins, genetic mutations and inborn errors, and neuromuscular disorders. Dilated cardiomyopathy usually presents with congestive heart failure (70-90%) with other presentations being sudden death (5%), arrhythmia and exercise intolerance (2%) and diagnosis during routine screening (3%).
