Glasgow coma scale is the standard used in assessing and documenting level of consciousness in head trauma. The AVPU (Alert, responsive to Verbal stimuli, responsive to Pain, Unresponsive) scale is a quicker assessment also commonly documented and used. It can be helpful to know how the two scales correlate to each other, particularly if one has just the AVPU assessment. This study found that children rated Alert have a GCS of 15 and those rated Unresponsive have a GCS of 3. Children who respond to Verbal stimuli have a GCS of at least 13, while those responsive to Pain have a more variable GCS ranging from 8-11. Another study found similar cutoffs of A: 14-15, V: 11-13, P: 7-10, U: 3-6. Putting this all together, we can approximate as follows, with the categories dropping by 3 points except the last one by 6:
Alert: GCS 15
Responsive to Verbal stimuli: GCS 11-13, average 12
Responsive to Pain: GCS 8-10, average 9
Unresponsive: GCS 3
